A Short Essay on Spiritual Warfare

by Mike Bee

Just over 100 years ago, in the year 1924, Rudolf Steiner wrote the following to someone he knew:

We are in a time of extremely serious trials.
We must be ever more conscious of this.

Now everything good and everything evil
Is coming to the light of day,
often in a most devastating way.

     Whoever is able to meditate
     can powerfully affect
     what is happening.

Only very few have the possibility of understanding
what is going on, let alone the strength to fulfil
     the task given to us.

It is all the more important that the few
who do have a true understanding
now apply all their strength –
     in utmost conscientiousness
and with the highest possible concentration

     …yes, with all the power
that they are able to call forth
from the depths of their souls –
to offer themselves and work towards this:

that Humanity does not completely lose
the Holy Spirit, which should lead
     the future evolution
     of Humanity.

Never before have we had to face the abyss
     so directly
     as in the present.

Steiner was well-aware of the second global conflict that was approaching, and the person he wrote to, Moritz Bartsch, a campaigner for Steiner’s ideas for social renewal, seems to have been involved in a confrontation with Adolf Hitler who had written a pamphlet against him. We don’t know the whole story, but Bartsch must have found himself in a situation that let him feel very strongly the evil that was at work behind the events that were going on outwardly in his society.

Steiner’s words, in my opinion, are relevant not for that between-war period alone. Isn’t today “a time of most serious trials”? People generally talk about the need to stand up against evil in the outer world, but Steiner draws attention to spiritual trials that must be undergone.

Whoever is able to meditate
can powerfully affect
what is happening

The concept of meditation covers a multitude of different beliefs and techniques. When I was at university, I was drawn to begin doing this and got involved initially in Transcendental Meditation. I was given a two-syllable mantra and told to repeat it silently. If it took me into a dream-state, I was told simply to go with the flow of that dream, and when I then returned back to normal consciousness, I should continue meditating the two syllables again.

Today, out of my training in voice, I know that the two consonants involved, in combination with a gliding diphthong vowel, would have been chosen to send me into an atavistic and somnambulant state of consciousness. Luckily, I did not practise it for long. Such meditation is the antithesis of what Steiner would have meant by meditation. Everything for a present-day meditative path needs to be based on clear consciousness; words or images can expand the mind by focusing it with greater than usual concentration.

So when Steiner calls on those are “able to meditate”, that will not mean everyone who engages in such an activity but those who work out of “utmost conscientiousness and with the highest possible concentration.” And according to Steiner, there are not enough of them present in the world.

Only very few have the possibility of understanding
what is going on, let alone the strength to fulfil
the task given to us.

With the proliferation of propaganda and fake-news in its many forms, it is difficult enough to simply understand what is happening outwardly. Steiner calls on spiritual warriors to commit themselves at a deep level. They should:

 …apply all their strength –
in utmost conscientiousness and
with the highest possible concentration

…yes, with all the power
that they are able to call forth
from the depths of their souls…

Spiritual warfare is not a task for wimps!

Steiner then adds what is at stake:

… that human beings do not completely lose
the Holy Spirit, which should lead
the future evolution
of Humanity.

Non-religious people should not be put off by a term from the Christian tradition. The Holy Spirit is something known to all genuine spiritual seekers, though people may use different names to describe it. One of the things that defines it is a person’s intimate connection with a power that flows from the spiritual world into human life and can be called “cosmic thinking”. Writers, inventors and great statesmen have always sought to be inspired by it, but Steiner states that we are at a point in human progress where its very existence is threatened. Think on the mass rallies Hitler gave at Nuremburg, Munich and other places. Wasn’t this a terrible attack on humanity’s spiritual capacities? Mass possession took the place of clear thinking, and an alien force took over human consciousness for its own sinister purposes. Think how much this has spread into so many other areas of life through new technologies becoming available.

Never before have we had to face the abyss
so directly
as in the present.

The abyss. Steiner made some clear predictions about this in the last few months of his life. 1933, according to him, was to be a year of great importance, and he said that in that time the first of the two so-called “beasts” would be released out of the abyss to wage war on humanity. In 1924, when Steiner wrote to Moritz Bartsch, the abyss was close. After 1933, to traverse the abyss at certain times in one’s life has become the experience of practically every human being. And according to Steiner, the second beast appeared on the public stage in 1998 which signifies the number 666 multiplied by three. 9/11 can be seen as this beast – Steiner gives it the name Sorat or Sorath – showing the world what it has in mind for the Twenty-first Century.

It is my belief that the danger of losing all connection with the Spirit that Steiner refers to has been averted for humanity at large, although much effort is needed to emerge out of the matrix and break through the many layers of lies that would conceal it from us.

But in 2021 humanity experienced the great attack of the covid bio-weapon. Our food had been diminished in quality and laced with chemicals since long before this date, and many other kinds of physical and spiritual weaponry have been used to weaken our thinking, but the fake vaccine was an attack as no other. Many people whom one would have hoped to be immune from this succumbed to the propaganda urging them to be compliant and take it. A researcher in the Steiner tradition, Thomas Mayer, has recently described the situation as he clairvoyantly experienced it in an interview with Doctors Christiane Northrup and Lee Merritt:

His researches are both positive and shocking. According to him, even those who were tricked at the time can come back from this if they are able to recognize the deception that has been put upon them. Thomas Mayer sees, however, frightful scenes in the world after death for those who cannot win insight while on earth. The fake vaccine was a very great and blatant attack on humanity in which the adversary powers entered right into the Temple, the “holy of holies” of the human being, attempting themselves to take the place that is reserved only for God.

We are in interesting times indeed. Battles are certainly being played out in the outer world, but spiritual warriors are also needed to join the ranks of those fighting on behalf of humanity in their meditative life. Steiner’s letter to Moritz Bartsch has deep relevance to us today a hundred years later. The Holy Spirit is with us, but the great drama of the battle for the human soul has many scenes still to be played out.
